Here is the February 5 edition of The Daily Recap presented by JFQ Lending.

Moving forward with the class of 2023

Now that the Class of 2022 is nearly complete, much of the focus can turn to the outlook for 2023. Georgia has done a good job so far, moving up to second overall by Rivals.

But much of the focus will be on whether the Bulldogs can land five-star quarterback Arch Manning (Isidore Newman/New Orleans). Georgia has forged many important relationships with Manning’s family and inner circle, which could bode well for the future.

“Georgia made all the right choices in recruiting Arch Manning,” Blayne Gilmer wrote. “UGASports spoke with Manning’s head coach not long ago and Georgia’s relationship with the five-star quarterback is as good and meaningful as it has with any school. By all accounts, Manning loved his visits to Athens last year and the Dawgs are well positioned in that recruiting with Texas and Alabama.

“Manning also enjoys a strong relationship with Pearce Spurlin, Georgian heritage Justice Haynes and priority target Rueben Owens II.”

Statistics crisis

Dave McMahon has compiled all the important defensive stats for the 2021 season. In two important defensive categories, the Bulldogs ranked first. The Bulldogs allowed an average of just 10.2 points per game and gave up 13 scrimmage touchdowns.

Georgia’s three shutouts were also the best of any team last season.

Baseball: Collins knows the key to success

At the dawn of its second season, Corey Collins believes the college game is starting to slow down. As a freshman, Collins hit .283 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs. He thinks more could be in store in the second year.

“I started the season knowing that nobody really knew who I was, and they didn’t really know how they were going to cast me,” Collins said. “So I just kept it simple. As I saw the guys I got better and better. I just had to slow down more. I went through a little something in the middle of the season, but I came back, I said to myself that I should just slow down and play, just take what they gave me.

Hoops: more questions than answers

Georgia assistant coach Steve McClain said that despite Georgia’s 6-16 record, he didn’t see the players wanting to give up the rest of the season.

“I think it comes down to this: what attitude does everyone have every day? You can have a defeated mindset, or you can have a mindset that we’ve been in really tough games, and some things have happened to us, but we’ve been so close,” McClain said. “I think that one, those kids are big kids. So their mindset, the mindset of the coaching staff is that there is no doubt that when we come in, we are preparing to win the next game. Children know this; they know that’s how we approach things. I have no doubt that is why they come in every day ready to go.
