ArtPop has named 20 artists to be part of its 2022 class.

ArtPop has named 20 artists to be part of its 2022 class.

Each year, ArtPop Street Gallery selects 20 talented local artists to showcase their art on billboards in the Charlotte area for residents to enjoy. During a ceremony on December 2, the association unveiled its class of 2022, chosen from a record number of applicants in a region of 13 counties.

“This is the ninth year of ArtPop to share the work of local artists with the community, and the incredible talent of the Great Charlotte area amazes us every time,” said Wendy Hickey, Executive Director of ArtPop Street Gallery.

Travis Johnson, an art teacher from Gastonia, Celia Kulp, a high school artist who is home-schooled, and two ArtPop alumni – Veda Saravanan and Eva Crawford – are among the selected artists.

“We received nearly 200 applications from an astonishing range of artistic mediums – glass, ceramics, digital art, encaustic, watercolor, fiber, paints, photography, mixed media and sculpture. We are delighted to showcase 20 of these artists on giant billboards, creating an outdoor art gallery for our entire region to experience and enjoy.

Art at 70 mph

ArtPop is a non-profit organization that gives communities better access to art by supporting the artists who create it. Each year, the organization sorts applications from artists from all disciplines and selects 19 local artists and one student artist for its program.

Since its inception in 2014, the program has promoted 148 artists through its Cities program and 25 through its Inspiration projects, including its Windows of Hope party box and Verse & Vino in Charlotte.

2022 artists will see their work displayed on $ 6 million of donated advertising space, from airport and interstate billboards to digital billboards and newsstands, nearly double the amount funded in last year’s program. As part of their selection, artists also receive free courses from ArtistsU, an article on the Google Arts & Culture Pop Art page, an honorarium of $ 500 (adults), and a scholarship and website of 1,500. $ (student), as well as access to sell their work at quarterly pop-up shows held at the Méridien Hotel Charlotte.

“We are very grateful to the LendingTree Foundation and all of our media partners for fueling the ninth year of our ArtPop Charlotte Cities program. You will start seeing installations of all the art in January 2022, ”Hickey said.

Advertising space and other supporting donations are owed to partners such as Adams Outdoor Advertising, Charlotte Center City Partners, Awedience Media, ArtistsU, Le Meridien Hotel Charlotte, CEN MediaGroup, Red Truck Media and Kenjoh billboards.
