Lafayette saw the largest increase of any U.S. metro area in mortgage lending in the first quarter.
The increase goes against a national trend of fewer mortgages being issued after about two years of historically low interest rates. Eleven metropolitan areas reported an increase in mortgage lending, with most reporting a decrease of 10% or more.
The average for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage on Thursday was 5.23%, according to national lending agency Freddie Mac. That’s up from a 3.2% rate at the start of the year.
Lafayette’s MSA had 1,123 guaranteed mortgages for residential property in the first quarter, down from 962 in the fourth quarter but down from 1,215 in the third quarter.

Refinancing skyrocketed to almost 3,000 in the second quarter of 2020 when rates first fell and narrowed to 1,867 in the first quarter of 2021, the data showed.
Nationwide, 2.71 million mortgages were issued in the first quarter, down 18% from the previous quarter and down 32% from a year ago, ATTOM reported. Refinancing deals were the main reason for this, down 22% from the fourth quarter and 46% from a year ago.
